From Commemorative
Biographical Encyclopedia of The Juniata Valley, comprising the Counties of
Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata, and Perry, Pennsylvania, 1897, page
831-832:
LYMAN AUGHEY, farmer, Licking Creek valley,
Milford township, Juniata county, Pa., was born October 27, 1846, on the
homestead farm in Milford Township. He is a son of Samuel and Elizabeth
(Kepner) Aughey.
…
Lyman Aughey received his education in the
Red Bank public school of Milford Township. He has passed his entire life on
the homestead farm, which he cultivated on shares from the time he was
twenty-one, until the death of his father in 1889, when he took entire charge
of its management. He has devoted much attention to the rearing of improved
live stock; and is especially conspicuous in the community as an extensive
beekeeper, as were also his father and grandfather before him.
Lyman Aughey was married in Duncannon, Perry
County, in 1872, to Miss Clara A. Logan, born in Port Royal, daughter of James
D. Logan, a tailor of that place. Their children are: Minnie B., who died
young; Mary L., who taught school for three terms in Juniata County, and was
graduated from the Shippensburg Normal School, June 30, 1897; and Nevin,
residing on the homestead.
His wife having died in 1876, Mr. Aughey was
again married, January 20, 1880, in Mifflintown, to Miss Mary A. Cramer, born
in Cambria County, and a daughter of Daniel F. Cramer, whose father, also named
Daniel, was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. Their children are: Fannie F.;
Ira R.; Henry F.; and Ray Elton.
Mr. Aughey has held the positions of township
clerk and assessor. He is a Democrat. He is a prominent member of the Lutheran
church, in which he has held the office of deacon, and has also been active in
Sunday-school work, both as a teacher and as secretary of the school. Both he
and his wife are members of the Grange of Milford Township. Among the unique
curiosities of the past age preserved by Mr. Aughey, and which attracts much
attention in the community, are a “grandfather’s clock” more than one hundred
years old, and one of the original tenplate stoves. Mr. Aughey’s life has been
one of industry, and uprightness, by which he has won the highest respect of
all who know him.
