William M. Brown was born on 27 Dec 1828 in Milford, Juniata, Pennsylvania, USA. He died on 24 Nov 1903 in Dakota City, Dakota, Nebraska, USA.

Sarah Dupes Aughey, daughter of Samuel Aughey and Elizabeth Kepner, was born on 08 Apr 1835 in Milford, Juniata, Pennsylvania, USA. She died on 16 Oct 1924 in Dakota City, Dakota, Nebraska, USA.

No information has turned up regarding William Brown’s family in Pennsylvania, except for the two photos at the bottom of this post. According to an old book, he was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Family history says that William and Sarah first came to Dakota County to visit relatives in 1870.  While there they purchased eighty acres of raw prairie land about seven miles southwest of Dakota City for ten dollars an acre. They returned to Pennsylvania where William worked about five more years on the railroad. He and his family of five children then moved back to Dakota County in 1875 to establish a permanent home on the eighty acres of prairie land purchased on the earlier trip.

On arrival in Dakota County, William purchased a team of horses, harnesses, and a wagon. Using a 12 inch plow that he had brought from Pennsylvania, he proceeded to break ten to twenty acres of the prairie land each year to raise crops. Construction of a home was started in 1875 and completed in 1876. Additional land was acquired from time to time in the late 1800's and early 1900's until the farm totaled 320 acres.
